Compare · Wix vs BuilderWeb

Wix has 800 templates. BuilderWeb has five signals AI platforms read.

Wix is a strong product. We use it ourselves on a couple of side projects. The trade-off is that Wix was designed in the era of Google blue links, before AI search engines started reading sites differently. The features AI Overviews and ChatGPT look for are not standard Wix output.

Short answer

If you need design depth, an app marketplace, or 800 template options: Wix. If your single most important visibility metric is "do AI platforms quote me?": BuilderWeb. Wix's gap is not in code quality; it is that AI-search-readiness was never a design goal.

Signal Wix BuilderWeb
Sitewide Schema.org JSON-LD Limited. Available on some content types via the Wix Editor; many page types ship no JSON-LD by default. Sitewide. Organization, WebSite, Article, FAQPage, Breadcrumbs, Product, Service. Validated before publish.
llms.txt and llms-full.txt Not generated. Wix does not currently support custom root files like llms.txt out of the box. Both shipped at root. Updated automatically when content changes.
RAG-ready content structure Depends on the template and the editor's choices. Many Wix sites have content trapped inside design components AI parsers struggle to extract. Every page structured into 200-500 word headed sections. One topic per section.
Identity clarity (Org schema, NAP, single canonical) Manual. The user has to add Org schema themselves through SEO settings. Automatic. Identity captured in onboarding, attached sitewide, validated for conflicts.
AI visibility monitoring Not offered. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Gemini tracked on the Pro tier.
Page weight / Core Web Vitals Heavy by default. Wix-rendered pages frequently fail Core Web Vitals on mobile without manual tuning. Static HTML. Light by default. Designed for Core Web Vitals to pass.
Custom domain Yes (paid tiers). Yes on the Pro tier.
Templates available 800+ templates. 27 templates today, expanding monthly. Quality first; the ones we ship pass the Five-Signal Model.
Free tier Yes, with Wix branding and limits. Yes, no credit card. Five-Signal Model included on free tier.
App marketplace and ecosystem Mature. Hundreds of plugins for booking, payments, restaurants, ecommerce. Limited today. We focus on the AI-search core and integrate with Stripe / Cal / others through the build flow.
Five-Signal score on every site No. Yes, regenerated each publish.
Best fit for Small businesses that prioritise design depth and an integrated app marketplace over AI-search visibility. Small businesses where AI-search visibility is the primary success metric.

When to choose Wix

  • ·You need a specific app from the Wix marketplace (booking, restaurant menus, complex ecommerce).
  • ·Design variety matters more than AI-search visibility for your use case.
  • ·You already run a Wix site and want gradual SEO improvements rather than a rebuild.
  • ·Your traffic strategy is paid + social, not organic search or AI search.

When to choose BuilderWeb

  • ·Your business depends on being recommended by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews or Gemini.
  • ·You want a fast, lightweight site that passes Core Web Vitals without manual tuning.
  • ·You do not want to write or maintain Schema.org, llms.txt, or sitemap files yourself.
  • ·You want to know what AI platforms are saying about your business and when answers go stale.

Common questions

Does Wix work for SEO? +

Wix has improved SEO substantially since 2022, particularly through Wix SEO Wiz and the SEO settings panel. The remaining gap is AI search: Wix sites generally ship without sitewide JSON-LD, llms.txt, or RAG-ready content structure. The features Google's AI Overviews and ChatGPT Search look for are not part of Wix's default output.

Can I add schema to a Wix site? +

You can, manually, through Wix's SEO settings (custom JSON-LD per page) or by injecting code through the Velo developer environment. Both paths require you to write the schema yourself and maintain it. BuilderWeb generates it automatically and validates it before publish.

Will my Wix site appear in ChatGPT? +

It can, particularly if the site has clear identity, original content, and good linking. The handicap is that Wix sites often have content trapped inside design components AI parsers cannot extract cleanly. Sites that pass the Five-Signal Model are quoted disproportionately more often per visit-volume than sites that do not.

Do you have an app marketplace like Wix? +

Not at the same scale, no. We focus the product on the AI-search core. For payments, bookings, forms and CRM, we integrate with the standard tools (Stripe, Cal.com, Tally, HubSpot) through the build flow rather than running a Wix-style marketplace.

Can I move my site from Wix to BuilderWeb? +

Yes. The cleanest path is to run the Wix URL through the AI Visibility Checker, see what is missing, then rebuild in BuilderWeb. We are working on a Wix-import flow that pulls existing copy and structure automatically; today it is a manual rebuild.
